Checkbox won't print in a report

I have a report generated from my main table. It contains two checkboxes which come out fine on-screen, but in print only the labels appear, not the tick boxes themselves. I have read other posts in which people talk about the checkboxes not appearing when the report is exported to Microsoft Word, but the implication seems to be that they should appear in a printed report. So why don't mine?

Have you made sure that the 'visible' settings for the check boxes, in the report design view, within the properties for the check boxes are set to visible or not?

Yes, Visible is set to "Yes" for both, but they will still only appear on-screen.
