I have a combo box on one of my forms linked to tblreason which is a list of reasons which need to be selected... one of them is "to settle to work and to stop distracting other students" the text field is set to length 255 in the table but everytime someone selects this option it comes up with a message "The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data"..

I have checked the width of the box and it is long enough...

does anyone know why this is happening? No doubt a really obvious answer!!

What's the RowSource of the combo?

What's the structure of the table you refer to?

What's the ColumnCount of the combo?

What's the BoundColumn of the combo?

What's the RowSource of the combo?
SELECT [tblReason].[Reason] FROM tblReason ORDER BY [tblReason].[Reason];

What's the structure of the table you refer to?
ReasonID - Autonumber
Reason - Text

What's the ColumnCount of the combo?
ColumnCount = 1

What's the BoundColumn of the combo?
1

Change this to:

Set it to SELECT ReasonID, Reason FROM tblReason ORDER BY Reason;

ColumnCount = 1

Set it to 2.

Your underlying field should be numeric.

Mile-O, you are supposed to answer the question, not ask more tsk:rolleyes:

What are you trying to do with the combobox text? - if you are trying to add it to another table, make sure that the length of that field is set to accept the text. However, you should not need to duplicate this information more than once in your Db and should store the unique ID associated with it.

This problem smacks more of poor structural design rather than anything else - make sure that your tblReason is linked via the Reason_ID and not duplicating text all over your Db. If you have a good structure, accept my apols.

Mile-O has asked very relevant q's (despite my comment - just like winding up the jocks) but more specifically what type of field are you trying to store the value selected from the combo?

Edit: Bugger, Mile-O still has the fastest fingers in the North:mad:

The exact same thing happened to me 2 years ago.

Hey Blackwidow, we all started in the same boat, some (such as Mile-O the genius) learned a little quicker than the rest of us (and he still types quicker than me - younger fingers, more time!)

No offence meant about the structure - just had a feeling that is all.

Some say I went down to the Crossroads and sold by soul... :cool:

What for, a packet of crisps and a 20p mix-up?
