Combo Box problem

I have a combo box with a querty in Data Source with 2 column (the first with 5 characteres, the second with 20 chars), I need only de first 4 characteres to put on source control.... I try to do in the event after update ... but this one return an message "the field is too small to acept the data"

I work in access in spanish.... I translate the message (maybe in english is different)

Check the size of the field in the underlying table.

The fact the two field are different size 5 char and 4 char... I need only de first 4 char of the field

There is *no* penalty for declaring a text field as 50 characters and only putting in 4 characters. Access does *not* reserve any space and only uses what you put in the field. Increase the size of the fields in the table to eliminate the problem.
