Coorupt database

I am attempting to open a database created in Access 97. The database was working fine yesterday however when I have come to open it today I am receiving an error message that reads incorrect format file is not an MS Access file. Windows has associated the *.mdb file with the file but will not open up. I have tried to use the repair utility provided by Microsoft but will not fix the file? Any ideas

Try creating a new database and importing everything in from the corrupt database.

Tried opening the database on several other machines and it still does not work tried access 97/ 2000!!

Jon, the owner of Access World, has a corrupt database recovery service. If you are willing to pay he could probably help you out.

I dont mean to be a skin flint but is there no other free way? I do not think my boss will sanction money for the repair and will look to a back up, which I am reluctant to do.
Are there any other free utilties or other ways in which I can attempt to recover the database?
