i have a report that i can order through buttons on report or openargs
is it possible to get a field that would count the number of time an item appears
ie, if i sort it by employee, it would count how many times each employee is on the report, if i sort it by TypeOfMalfunction, it would count how many times each appears.

Sort has no bearing on size. If you sort the alphabet A-Z, there's just as many letters as Z-A. To get a count in a report you simply put a =Count([Field]) in the heading/footer of the section you are counting.

Possibly, you didn't mean 'sort'. Can you post data to illustrate what you want?

i know.. but still
i have no grouping in my report, it's simple coloumns
i can press a button, that sorts it through one of the coloumnsž
then data goes like this

1 .... id ....... malfA
2.... id ...... malfA
3. id ..... malfB

how can i get the result that says malfA 2, malfB 1

i want to do it on the fly, when i press sort by coloumn x, i'd like the option to know how many times each distinct option in that coloumn appears

i could catch conditions string that opens the report to public variable, then open recordset based on that and count 'manually', but i'm sure there's easier way from within the report

The best option would be a sub-report.
