Create a Relationship between 2 different field types

Can i link a text field to a number field?

I have to linked tables. In one table I have a field, lets call it "Example", which is populated with a 6 digit number and defined as a number.. In the other table the same field exists but it is defined as text.. The 2 tables are linked so I can't change the field types.
