Creating an 'Updates' field

Basically i have an application where calls are being logged. I have a text box to add updates to the issue, and then when you press a button it will update a 'history' text box/field with the users name, date/time and whatever had been entered into the original text box.

I am a bit of a new with access (done a bit at uni years ago) so i am struggling.

I know how to get the username, date and time, what i don't know is how to add that along with the text from the updates text box as well as the text that was already in the history box.

Can anyone help please?

Assuming you have a field that the user adds the new text into and you already have a text box containing the existing history. What you are attempting to do, I summise, it to add the new to the old.

We use a database for a similar function here, and we have gone a slightly different route. We have a separate table which stores all the notes for every customer, linked by a customer ID. This then displays as a subform in the table.

Have used a tool that someone linked to on here for auditing, which holds code about adding username etc to the updates.

Guess it depends on how you want it to work.

I have actually just went about creating a new table to see if i can get that to work.

Any tips on linking the 2 together? I have set up a relationship so that references are the same, but i may be going a long way around it.

Need to check, but about to go into a meeting...

Set up a one to many relationship between the tables, and then when designing your form, use the wizard to put the subform in, and set your own relationship there - eg table1.ID = table2.ID (or it might be form1.id, but you get the idea!). Don't use an autonumber on the second table!

This definitely seems the way to go.

The only problem is when i embed a form, it is ok for showing previous edits, but is there a way i can actually use an embedded form to input the comments too?

Absolutely - what version of access are you using? I use 2000...!! (we're a bit behind the times here!). Check that the subform is set to allow edits. It works as standard in 2000, but not sure about later versions! If you have the subform set as a datasheet too, that might help.

Thanks for your replies I am using 2007.

Whenever i embed a form i have already created to add records it just shows as a white box, not the form that i tried to add.

I'm afraid I have absolutely no knowledge of Access 2007 I take the it the wizard is turned on and you're following through all of that? Other than that, hopefully someone else will be along soon to point you through the rest of it!!

Good luck with it - I know its easy in 2000, so can't imagine they have made it harder, but who knows!

Yeah i am adding the form via the wizard, it seems to only want to be to view results and not actually add them, unless i am being very stupid somewhere.

When you got the error message Object required you did remember to change the control names to match yours, didn't you?

As my example was aircode you would need to manipulate it to suit your design.
