Creating autonumbers/index with code

I am trying to generate an autonumber at a form level to be inserted back to a linked table that can't create it's own auto index. Is there a way of looking up the last record and adding one as the default value of a field when the record type is new?

Any help greatly appreciated.

It is really unproductive to post the same question hourly. If the version of DB2 in use at your shop is too old to support identity columns, you will find plenty of suggested methods for generating your own by searching this forum. Further questions should continue in the thread below.
