The U.S. Navy had a commercial product for ORACLE and SQL Server databases (and presumably would have worked for any ODBC-enabled DB) that could generate randomized data. Made testing easy because of the scripts it could run that would interact cleanly with the back-end DB. But every now and then one of our DBAs would forget having used it and we would get some of the damnedest names, most of which had entirely too many consonants. Names like PBRZEWSKI and DOSTOYEVSKI and such. (Obviously had a selection of foreign-sounding names for random selection.) Then of course the system would have to be cleaned because of "leakage" of test data into a production system.
