There is no limit to records indeed, only in size, as far as I understood. My experience: by 1.5Gb it starts to become very unstable to work with.
Initially the number of records was limited to 8^8, I believe (16 mln records).
By now this is 12^12, as far as I understood (8,196 bln records).
But this is "out of my head"; I was running into this about a year ago.
