Deleted fields just won't go

I have deleted a field from a table but when I tried to delete the same field from the form I keep getting an error message - contains changes that are incompatible with the current database format. What have I done wrong please?

In A2010 or later, if controls are in a layout, then deleting a control can leave an empty rectangular control - marked with dots - which A2007 doesn't like. But it too can be deleted by clicking on it and deleting it.
