ok In My Database I Have People Who Book out items. i need to be able to know if that item has already been booked out.
how can i do this

You could create a further field (Yes/No) that, when the item is checked out, you set it to Yes, and likewise No when it has been returned.

but i want the computer to tell me whether it has been booked rather than looking myself.

Couldn't you use the DLookup function then:

If your selecting "items" from a combo then simply adding the yes/no field to the combos underlying query and setting the criteria for the yes no field to no will prevent the booked out items being available for selection
