I am using windows XP at first. But, recently, I have updated it to Windows 7. Everything just works well there, except one. The system partition becomes low after the updating and has only 12% of free space left. That also slows down the computer response. Therefore, I am looking for a way to extend its space. Do you have any way for me? Do you know how to extend a system partition space step by step? Any idea will be greatly appreciated. Please, help me!

The following three ways may give you some clues:
1). Delete some unnecessary files or programs on your system partition to free the drive space.
You can have many ways to free up the partition space, like deleting some useless files/folders, uninstall some unnecessary programs and running the Disk Cleanup tool.
2). Extend your partition space in Disk Management
Back up everything important on another drive, shrink your rest partition with enough free space and extend your system partition by right clicking it in Disk Management.
3). Apply some partition resizing tools.
If you are not so familiar about the partition resizing tuffs, you can directly use some partition resizing tools like: GParted, IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free, Active Partition Master and more.
PS: Always back up everything important well before resizing partition in case of data loss.

OK! Trying to extend this partition space could be a really good ways to go:
1). You can try to extend this partition space in Disk Management when the free space is adjacent to this system partition.
2). But, if the free space is not continuous to this system partition, the “extend” option in Disk Management is often grayed out and cannot be used. So, you have to use other partition resizing tools to help yourself.
Just try to search one for your partition over the internet.
Here is a related article that may tell you how to extend this partition in detailed:

Also learn to save wanted data well on another drive in advance.

What version of Windows do you use?
If you are using Windows 7 or 8, there are often some related Disk Management tools for you to directly extend your wanted partition space. In your case, if there is still some free space on the same physical drive with your system partition. You can directly shrink one partition with free space in Disk Management and right click this system partition to extend it there.
Of course, if this doesn’t work for you, you do have ways to use some partition resizing tools to extend this partition space in several clicks.
But, if you are using Windows XP, the partition resizing tool could be your best way to go on.
Here is a video tutorial that will teach you to extend partition space step by step:

I hope my words can give you some clues.
