When you want to delete a record out of MS Access, you get the default pop-up message confirming you want to delete the record [YES] [NO].

I have a few users who are not paying attention and hitting a combination of keys (I am guessing Alt + D) and getting this message. They then do not look, and confirm the deletion of the record.

I am thinking of two ways around this.

1) Change the default to [NO] when this pop-up dialog opens up (the default is [YES]).

2) Disable this pop-up box, and then create my own to confirm the deletion.

Are either of these possible, or has anyone ever had to work around this issue? I have never had an issue with this, and was not sure how to attack it.

Let me know.

Thank you,

T.J.

1. I don't think you can change the default button for the standard message

2. but I think you can use the form "on delete" method to intercept this behaviour and replace it with your own test. [not 100% sure - but i think i had a similar issue]

3. You may also be able to use referential integrity to prevent deletes - that will stop Access deleting anything that would break a relationship anyway.

I would also think about turning off the special keys in the StartUp panel.

Thank you all for your help.

I believe I have found the source of the error to be not what I thought it was, and this shocking to me.

If you are on a sub-form and click [Alt]+[D], it asks you if you want to delete the current record. If you click "Yes", it deletes the main form record.

WTH????!!!!????

Is there anyway to disable this key combination in MS Access?

Thank you,

T.J.

As I said earlier, go to Tools>Startup... and uncheck "Use Access Special Keys". You might consider unchecking all the rest as well.

I did this, then compacted and repaired the database, and [Alt] + [D] is still available.

as i say, i believe you can intercept this with the on delete event, and cancel it there

How about unchecking all of the boxes on the StartUp form and test your <ALT> D. Maybe it is a shortcut key. I keep them all unchecked in a released Application except maybe the Status bar.
