Who knew? We don't have a dog, but as I casually watch dog food commercials, I've noticed that they only display and mention food from the produce isle! I assume that this focus on "healthy" foods is being done to influence humans into buying dog-food based on the assumption that if it is desirable for a human it must be desirable for a dog.

It's probably because non-meat ingredients are probably preferable to the meat-ingredients in dog food BECAUSE the meat-ingredients in dog food are the worst of the worst byproduct type crap.

If someone made a dog food brand that was fresh meat, that's different - but who goes to that trouble with their dog? I admit, I feed mine the salmon/rice/yams type stuff because I've been convinced that the brands that use meat use the worst possible meat.

There is a dog food out with "Fresh" as part of the name, but I will avoid advertising it. It contains a blend of ingredients that, prepared differently, people would eat. Dogs, given the chance, would eat everything typically found on your dinner plate. It's a side effect of being a mammal that they can indeed subsist on vegetables and grains. They just PREFER meat. But to be honest, they aren't that picky.

Lets just ignore the fact that dogs are carnivores which since they've been domesticated, eat "people" food. The point isn't so much what the food contains, it's more about the advertisement itself which is designed to manipulate the people buying the dog food. Why not just give the animal table scraps and save yourself a ton of money?

Our cats would eat a lot of table foods but they were pickier than dogs and had a strong preference for meat. The cats have not been so domesticated that they've lost their taste for hunting. They can take care of themselves if left to their own devices.

Yes, but now and then they bring home "souvenirs" to impress their "mama" person. My step-daughter has 3 cats that have a neighborhood teeming with potential "keepsakes" that end up in the darnedest places. To be fair, dogs do that too.
