dsum or not

In my query im using dsum to accumulate hours worked for a shift.If the employee has three entries in one day and during entry 2 goes into overtime(accumulated over 8 hours) dsum isn’t helping me

run: DSum("[event regular hours]","[tblbuild]","[tblbuild]![stagehand] = " & [tblbuild]![stagehand] & " AND [tblbuild]![day of event] <=#" & [tblbuild]![day of event] & "#")

can some one point me in the right direction
