Is it possible to set query criteria through input in a form? I know a user can type into a pop-up parameter box but this means that they have to spell everything perfectly. I wish for a user to select a value in a drop down box which becomes the criteria for the query.

Do it all the time
In the criteria row of the query right click, select build and then go from there.
Basically you can select the form you want and then the field or combo box etc. Do not forget to click okay when you have selected the field so that it gets transferred to the query.
This also illustrates the importance of using meaningful names for controls. Makes it much easier to select the correct one.
