I have a form showing in continuous form mode, with a list of personnel and details.

To protect it against accidental change I've set it to not allow edits or deletions.

I'd like to put a button on it that allows people to edit the current record. What's the best way of going about it?

At the moment, I'm thinking that the button opens a 2nd form, filtered to that specific record only, that allows edits. Not sure I know how to write the code of that, but I'm sure I can muddle through. Unless you all think there's a better way.

That's certainly a sensible approach. It means that when you are editing you are only looking at one record, thus reducing the risk of the wrong record being edited.

First create your new form (single view).

Then go into the design view of your current form and add a button. A wizard will pop up where you can select Form Operations->Open From.

You then select the new form and on the next page of the wizard you choose the option Open the form and find specific data to display.

On the next page you tell it the field on which you wish to match. The rest is self explanatory.

When you click on the button it will open the new form for the currently selected record.

You can handle the security through the Access security features. Google/read up on this if your not familiar as it needs to be carefully implemented. Or you could add a very basic feature If userID="xxx" then display button, else don't etc

Wohoo. Thank you. Worked like a charm. Just had to borrow some code from another form that was filtering against the specific record (the default seems to be to ask for criteria - and I didn't want that).

Thank you! This forum is a boon to my health and sanity :-)
