I need to create a fairly simple database. 3 or 4 tables, one with staff details, one with training details and one with staff hroups. I want to create a form showing staff details and the training they have done. Also a form with staff grous and the associated training plus a report shpwing individual training to datye by staff member and training upcoming by staff group. Also, if possible, showing when training is due for renewal. I have trawled the ned for a free sample database I can customise, but I am getting confused wth changing all the links in visual basic after I change field names. can anoe help set up a simple database (I will send field names) and forms and I can populate it and format etc as I want??

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum,

Have you tried looking on YouTube for creating an access database, theres plenty of videos to watch that will help you along the way.

It is always best to give it a go rather than asking someone to build you a complete database, as they will not understand all your requirements.

Here is a link to get you going

Yes I have but the examples I can download are too complex and its just the basic start I need, then I can do all the forms and reports myself. All I have it a staff table with:

Staff ID
fname
sname
title
grade
staff group
Email
telephone

and a table with about 9 staff groups:

Managers
Senior P
Senior N
etc etc

I have a list f training courses for different staff groups with start dates and valdity periods. How can I structire the tables ad queries best?? I want to be able to select a training course based o the staff members group, and then select a date from the training list for that group. where should my key fields and joins etc be?? Your help would be appreciated!

Well the first table is OK, but the second needs more fields. In the second table have

Staff ID (the same as the first table)
Position (Managers, Team leaders etc.)

and in a third table have

Position (Manager etc)
Training (courses that they can participate in)
Start Dates (start dates)
Validity Periods (length of validity)

Now the releationship (link) between the first two tables would be by "Staff ID", and the link between the last two tables would be "Position" just follow the same thoery for the other tables so there is a common field that you can link tables together, note that not all tables need to join to every other table but there must be a contunious link through them.

This is by no means a finished plan more of a practical way of learning step by step but once you have done the above and your project evovles it will enable you to see where the weakness is and what else needs to be done.

One last thing you will probably write it several times before you get it right, but part of beong a good access programmer is being able to work backwards almost as in, we can visualize the end product and the elements and logic we will need to use to accomplish it.

So get cracking and when your tables are sorted we can go onto query.
