I have a database that I have been using successfully for seven years. I update it frequently with improvements and additions as needed. Recently I have been getting error 3197.

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time. (Error 3197).

Sometimes I get a message stating that ' there is not enough memory space to carry out the process' or something to that effect.

What is interesting is that I am the only user and the back-end is not on a server. The database is split.

At times I lose all the forms in the database and sometimes also the reports. Thank God I keep a back-up of the database frequently. Sometimes before I lose the forms i get something about the 'AO index'.

I do not know what the problem is and I am afraid that I may have some corrupt files on the database and that I may be caught out some day without a suitable back up.

Can anyone enlighten me with this problem ? Many thanks.

I appreciate your help in this problem and your direction. However, I am having problem making changes to my database program because of this problem. As I have explained to you I have a back-up of my database front end. So at the moment it is not a question of retrieval of program or data. Each time I try to make additions or alterations to the front-end I get error 3197 and the changes are not saved.

I suppose I will have to service the error that is causing the problem. Any hints on how I can get to know where the problems is please?

I am not an expert in Access so one has to explain clearly. On the other hand I have managed to make quite an intricate database with a lot of VBA code and it has served me well over along number of years.

all help is much appreciated.
