Windows XP, Office 2003, new laptop, 4 gig ram, P9500 processor. .

I can open excel and enter data or whatever in a few cells just fine.
Then I highlight a few cells, not many say 5, and click on Bold or cntl-B, and Excel takes up to 15 seconds to format the text,

What the heck is excel doing that takes 15 seconds, and is there a setting to change this behavior?

thanks

1. Do you have Sharing enabled? If so, I would delete it if not absolutely necessary.

2. Occasionally do a SAVE AS and then use the same name to overwrite. Excel keeps track of the changes everytime you hit save and it will sometimes help to reset all of that by doing a Save As.
