Feeling dumb but ....

What are the little plus signs you get in tables? I have never used them myself but I have just taken over another database with loads of tables that have these little plus signs placed before the first field. When you click on them they show other data. Seems a good feature but I have no idea how to get them or how they work.
Can anyone give me a brief heads up on this please

Those little plus signs indicate that the table entry is linked to another set of data located in another table through some Relationships connections. To view how the tables are connected, go to tools -> relationships.

Typically, the items with the + next to them are primary keys for that table and serve as a foreign key on another.
