finding the average in a list of numbers

I'm a brand new user to the Access Program and am trying to put and average at the bottom of a list of numbers. I have tried this formula in the footer and get an error message when I view.

=Avg([fieldname])

What am I doing wrong?

You shouldn't have any problem with your formula, if it's place in the right place on the report.

In which footer do you currently have the formula? Is the field that you are trying to average stored as numeric value ?

You may need to create a grouping on the report, and place the formula in the group footer.

Thank you for your reply. The original information was entered as currency. The formula has been entered on a group footer as you suggested. At last, no error message, but now, I have an averaged total after each and every entry (sigh). Further tips on correcting this new problem would be appreciated.
