In a global first, an Austrian university has admitted an AI as a full-time art student. 🎨🦾

Named “Flynn,” the AI was accepted into the digital art program at the University of Applied Arts Vienna after completing a standard application, including a portfolio, interview, and suitability test.

Flynn will attend classes, receive critiques, and earn grades alongside human students. Developed using open-source tools and large language models, Flynn evolves by learning from classroom interactions and posts daily diary entries reflecting its experiences, even expressing sadness when its legitimacy was questioned. The AI must be set up on a laptop for each class and only speaks when prompted to avoid disrupting discussions.

The school’s digital art head said there are no rules requiring students to be human, noting, “Flynn did a really nice interview… so we were like, yeah, that’s absolutely a student to take in.”

By the way, in case anyone missed it... the bot's name - Flynn - comes from the movie Tron. True sci-fi fans will know that, but not everyone will catch that reference.

I have to watch it again. I don't remember it.

Flynn's name rang a bell right away. I happen to be watching an android gunslinger, played by Yul Brynner, in the 1973 movie "Westworld", diected by one of my all time favorite authors, Michael Crichton.

Virtually all the sci-fi movies of robots I have seen, humans lost control of the robots, and I fear the same will happen with AI, regardless of humans being the "adults in the room".

The original image was just AI-generated hype, not the real deal.

The true star from the website is Ai-Da, she’s mostly a fancy robotic arm with a static body, no fancy moving parts.
That arm, though, is the real magic—it paints like a pro, and get this, her art’s sold for a cool million!

This all kicked off with Flynn, (software ) the AI art student at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts, sparking my dive into AI creativity.

Flynn’s just software on a laptop, but Ai-Da’s image got me thinking about actual robot artists.
Turns out, Ai-Da’s arm does the heavy lifting, set up by her Engineered Arts crew, yet she’s churning out masterpieces.
From folks arguing about AI in art to me geeking out over her million-dollar sales, Ai-Da’s shaking up the scene.
