is is possible to open a form to add a child record related to the highlighted record in the subform?

You should look to your table structure and relationship. In Access the Form/subformis meant to deal with a 1-many relationship.

Assuming your table structure is OK, yes you can do what you proposed.

Are you sure this will be for adding new records irrespective of what already exists?

Suppose you have table_Customers one-to-many with table_CustSites which in turn is one-to-many with table_CustSiteRooms (if you ran a contract cleaning company).
You might then want a master form showing Customer and a sub-form with all Sites for that Customer.
You could then have a button next to each Site that said 'Add Room' which would pop-up a blank Room form, but you would likely be better off with a sub-sub-form showing all the Rooms in a Site, with an option to add new rooms in the sb-sub-form.
