Group by Last Name

This seems like it should be really simple. I've been trying to create a report with a list of last names grouped alphabetically. That is, all last names starting with "a" would be the first group, "b" the next group,etc. Can't seem to get it right.

Under Group On, the only selections I have available are:
Each Value and
Prefix Characters

(Using Access 2000)

Prefix Characters seems to do the same thing, or at least what I need it to do. Thanks so much for your assistance.
