A dept. tech person just said that he is not installing Access 97 on new PCs with Windows XP, on our network, because Microsoft states that it will cause problems doing so, and that soon in service packs the ability to do so will disappear, altogether?
Have you heard? The deatils? Where can I find references to this.
Thanks. I know there are still many of us using Access 97 databases, for various reasons.

BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS TRUE? Or where to get info on this? I did not see any on Microsoft site, but maybe I missed it.

Russ

I don't know about compatibility issues, but I know that Ac97 (and in fact ALL of Office97) has "fallen off the edge." AC97 is no longer supported. With the Service Pack 2 mods, any AC97 that used automation (Active X) elements would probably be disabled because of requiring digital signatures on such components.

You can manually undo this if you wish, but if you ever reinstall another XP service pack, it will probably reinstate the same restriction. There is also the fact that MDAC for AC97 cannot be patched in a way that makes it as secure as the goals set for WinXP environments.

Perhaps the things you overheard were related to these issues.

Thanks for repsonses, but supposedly it went beyond that. That Access 97 databases just would not function.
SO I still ask does anyoneout there know anything specific including where I can get physical/downloadable documentation?

We currently run Access 97 (Both Delevoper & Runtime) across our network using XP Office Professional, no problems encountered.

here's the deal with A97 and XP. On a system with WindowsXP SP2. If you install SP2 BEFORE you install Office 97, you will get an error on install. There is a registry entry that you can adjust to let 97 install properly.
The easiest way is to install 97 on sp1 and then install sp2.

THANKS TO ALL for your responses.
And if anyone else 'hears' anything, let me know.

Question

We currently have Access 97 on all our PC's at work, however, next month we are getting new PC's with XP and Access 2003. What problems will we encounter? I am the go-to person who has to fix any problems or issues we have, so I'd appreciate any advice you may have.

I started this thread because of what a tech support person here said.
HOWEVER, I have a new PC with XP (although not SP2) and Access 97 and all is well.
We also have PCs with Access 97 and Access 2000 on them.
Microsoft has a knowledge base help guide (real brief) onhow to have multiple versions on the same PC.
Good luck.

XP SP2 and Access

Just spotted various comments about Access 97 and SP2 problems. However I am having problems with Access 2000 databases since I installed SP2, every time I try to open a database I get jet engine errors. I cannot open any version of any database on this computer which has Office 2003 and XP Professional with SP2 installed. However they function perfectly on old computer with XP Professional SP1 and Office 2002 software???? I have decided to keep my old computer just to run the databases. Any one else finding these compatability problems?

mmm, I've never had any problems running xp with access 97 and office 2k, 2k2 or 2k3...as long as you install 97 first in a seperate dir and then the newer office in the normal dir.

although I can't remember installing 97 after sp2...will try tonight on a virtual machine.

it might be out of support, but I can't see why it wont work?

Hi. I wa sout for a few days, mainly blizzard related.
Anyway, were you able to try it in a virtual macvhine?
=Thanks for info.
And if anyone else has experience...

97 problems with XP sp2

I started a thread on this a few months back. I tried many times to install 97, 2000 and 2002 on an XP SP2 machine. While 2000 and 2002 worked ok, 97 always came up with an error message (cannot remember exactly what it was now).

Anyway, after many attempts I gave up and now use an XP SP1 laptop for my '97 development work.

Hi. Based on other responses, et cetera, could it have been the order in which things were installed?

Russ

Hi Russi,

I was following a Microsoft guidance note on installing the Access versions so I know I installed them in the correct order. But, after reading the above notes, I now wonder if I should have loaded '97 before installing SP2. Unfortunately that was installed before I even got the PC so I didnt have much choice.

I think I may need to uninstall everything and try again :-(
