I'm very much a beginner when it comes to Access Databases, and I've searched the forums a bit and can't find anything, so I was wondering if anyone would mind explaining a way to get a table so when one value is entered is decides what the value of another cell is?


Simplified: I've got 2 cells, and whatever is entered into cell1 needs to define what will be the value of cell2.

I could code it if I knew how to refer to table cells in the cdoe...

But there must be an easier way... I'm hoping...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you use the Access help files to learn more about Access tables and how to use them. Then I think you will see that your question is misguided.

Hmm.. I guess having access to help files would be useful then.

I am misguided.. hence here.... can it be done, so entering data in one cell will define whats entered in another? I know its not exactly meant to be done... but can it be?

Cascading Combo Boxes...

I just went through this exact thing. Look up cascading combo boxes. Especially the recent posts and subsequent help I recieved. You should get exactly what you need.

Why don't you have help files?

Data should be entered into a table by a form. You can then control what data goes into the table.

It is possible to do what you want. The cascading combo boxes suggested will go on this form.

I don't have the help files that came with Office because my computer is broken, in short.

Cascading combo boxes don't seem the best thing to use, I want it so when one thing is selected the other is like forcibly chosen, not giving another set of options based on that. Its marks being entered, and I want them to define the grade shown.

Yes, the data is entered into the table via a form and all. When the marks are entered, i don't really want it so the grade can be changed, any other thoughts anyone?

Quite simply, you don't store the value in a field in your database. That's bad practice.

If you have the expression to determine the grade based on the marks then the grade becomes a calculated value which you DO NOT store. As it's calculated, it can be calculated at ANY time on either a query, form, or report.
