Help! What does Overflow means?

I am trying to sum my total at the bottom of my report. It does not let me sum in the query or in the actual report and keeps giving me the error message "Overflow". Can anybody help! Thank you in advance

Overflow usually relates to a number field where the datatype has been assigned as too small for the data held in it.

For example, a datatype of byte will hold a value up to 255, enter 300 and an overflow occurs. Therefore to solve this problem, if a field is set to byte increase it to integer, if integer increase to long, and if it may potentially hold a decimal set it to single or double.
