hi to all;
I am new to access, I need help, , my db consist of products and values, :

code name value
1001 tomatoes 222
1002 potatoes 425
..
1999 carrots 111
( vegetables group: code from 1000-1999)

2001 apple 214
2002 banana 254
..
2999 orange 354
(fruits group: code from 2000-2999)
(meat group: code from 3000-3999)
....
The number of groups is big, and also the number of products
My target is to get total value for each group level;
do I have to make a new column contains a new code for sub groups?
I would appreciate any feed back
regards

I hope those are not the actual names of your fields .. as all 3 are Reserved Words in Access ...

Now .. you can get the values you ask by creating a Totals query and Group by the name field ...

thank you R. Hicks for your kind respond; no its not the acctioal names, what I want is the total for vegetables sub group, the total for fruits sub grup, not at product level
thanks

R. Hicks;
actually the product code I am using is international Hs code, consist of 8 digits, the first 2 digits refer to the chapter( chapter 7= vegetables, 8=fruits, 2 meat,..) and the second 2 refers to sub chapter, then to detail product), its important to consider this coding as basis for grouping and calculation at different levels, for example 2 digits= chapter level,4 digits, ..itc)

any help is appreciated
