i want to do a small specialist website (where i will be the only person inputting information) which lists certain job vacancies and which can then be sorted by either salary, location etc by the viewers

i have no budget for this and wonder if an access database is a possible solution

i would also like to see an online example if possible if anyone knows of one

any help gratefully received

thanks

Lucy:

Access is certainly capable of handling what you are describing. With a bit of know-how, an average user should be able to put it together.

This forum contains a wealth of information on just about any topic related to Access, so poke around and you should be fine.

Lucy,

A couple of questions;

Do you have access to a web server? You say you have no budget, but I would think you will need at least;

1. A domain name (very cheap)
2. Web hosting (reasonable, but going to be a regular monthly fee, at least 10 GBP)

Also you will need to check with your hosting company what sort of package they offer; the cheapest will be very basic and don't always let you upload even simple CGI scripts. I think these will be your major issues rather than whether what you want can be done in Access.

There are a LOT of job vacancy websites out there, just have a look on google. Its a very competitive market. Are you actually going for a specific slice of the job market?

Not the one I use although this one is ¼ the price you suggest at 10 GBP. At $5 USD per month, this seems appropriate. And it has mySQL support. I'd enquire whether they have phpMyAdmin as that makes using mySQL much easier - especially for dafties like me.

LOL Yeah I guess reasonable is a very subjective word. There are so many web hosting packages its a bit confusing! I have my own web server at home (Slackware, Apache) which is more than reasonable (free!), my domain name is 2GBP a year. Fortunately as well, the hosting company allows me to point DNS records to my fixed IP (yes its a bit more a month, but well worth it for me personally). I have a 2Mb DSL line, as my website is just for friends and family traffic is fairly non-existent so paying for full hosting would be overkill for me.

This is 1 and 1's Cheapeast Business offer;

I was originally going to use 1&1 but chose not to when it became clear that they wanted six months' payment up front. I currently use the professional plan of Ez Web Hosting which suits my needs.

confused about php my admin

thanks everyone for the advice

i have a website with i and i - it is the small business version so i think it should be good enough for my needs. i have downloaded the free software from recruitment software and loaded it onto the server. buit it says to open an sql or myphpadmin to interface with it. i dont have a clue what these are or how they relate to the database

are they software programs i have to pay for or download - or is it provided by 1 and 1

any more suggestions gratefully received

thanks

phpAdmin is a open source tool for managing mySQL databases.

On the Admin screen behind the scenes for your site you probably have a list of different features. It may be here. If not, ask your host about it.
