IS NULL doesn't work

I have a query with a column that contains text values. 2228 of the fields in that column are empty and I want the query to return the records with those empty fields. In Critieria I typed Is Null, but when I run the query NO records are returned. I can't figure out why. Ideas?

IS NULL works just fine.

The result tells you that field is not NULL. It probably contains a string consisting of 0 or more spaces.

Sorting for "0" length does indeed get the fields to show up. Thx.
