Is the USA doing a good job as self appointed world police?

We all know and laugh at the US and the way they muscle in on conflicts that may affect their oil flows etc.
There are 2000 US soldiers dead just in the Afghanistan conflict alone. The US insists on fighting useless wars especially in dead and alive holes like Afghanistan.

Does anybody think the US is right to get involved in these conflicts? Why bother? Don't say global peace because things are a lot worse now since George Bush upset things.

Will the US get involved in the current Japanese / China conflict over territorial rights? Or is China just too strong. The US is still the most hated nation on earth how can it rectify this situation?

Do people in the US want to pull out of these places and spend time and money saved on the USA or are people happy to have soldiers killed for no reason and still have economic decline in America. Judging by the TV reports is seems like most small towns in the US have gone into decline and most factories and shops are closed and the people live on state benefits. Presumably these are the people that Romney doesn't care about (the 47%)

No. While each conflict is different, it is usually due to money or crazy religious people. Some people here in the states actually think that we have to make sure Israel is ruled by Jewish people otherwise the end of the world cannot occur. Thus Israel is our "strongest ally in the region". As a country we have meddled so much in the middle east that no American should be surprised when they are burning our flags.

Im kinda missing that point as well, I can see where you're coming from in regards to Korea/Vietnam, but as Brian pointed out the US was directly attacked.

And not to split hairs, US shipping was attacked in the the Atlantic well before the declaration against Japan (and not only the ships they had loaned to the British in the loan/lease agreement)

All of US overseas involvement is to protect its interests, a fact not a criticism, although Afganistan seems to suggest otherwise, Korea/Vietnam was its fear of the spread of communism. The interests being looked after appear to be those of a powerful elite not the common people, as per the English overseas adventures of the past, not sure what the idiots who run the country are upto these days.
