If I make a database where client informations includes address details like street number & name, town, city, country etc...

...and then I go to print envelopes using a report onto envelope sized paper...

...some addresses may be missing fields (like not all have town or suburb). Is there a quaick and easy way of compacting the address so gaps do not appear on the final printout?

If you are using textboxes, check out the Can Shrink and Can Grow properties.
This may be what you need.

Sorry mrabrams but I think you're way off.

I've attached a simple example to this reply so you can more clearly see what I'm talking about. Please let me know if you find a solution.

Thanks for replying btw.

The label wizard in reports will do it all for you!

Aha!!!!

Thanks neileg.... I have a problem with the wizard (it doesn;t always fire up) but it went and I see what you mean!!! :)

And y'know what? mtabrams wasn't off track at all - he actually hit the nail on the head! (I just didn't understand his solution enough to be able to implement it).

The solution (non wizard method) is as follows...

1. Make sure all labels on enveope have unique names which are NOt the same as any fields (don't call the 2nd row label "street" becaus ehtat name is alsredy taken by the client table. Call it "place2" instead.

2. Surround any label values with the =Trim( ) function.

3. Say yes to "can grow" and "can shrink" fields on all envelope labels. :)

...and it's working! Thanks a million :) Solution example attached.
