Large numbers and Combo boxes

Can someone help please? I am writing a small retail application where I use a barcode scanner. My problem is that most barcodes seem to be 13 digits long and I can't get MS Access 2003 to recognise a code of 11 digits or more in a combo box. I have a table with the codes as a field where I have tried all sorts of settings for number formats but if I try to access the longer ones I get "item is not on the list" response. It's not the scanner by the way, I get the same result if I type in from the keyboard.

use a data type of text

In the Table;

Data Type = number
Field Size = Double
Format = Fixed
Decimal places = 0

If you require a very large number of digits that are not going to be used in calculation then treat them as strings
