Anyone working on something besides databases? Here is my latest project. All the materials for this thing are recycled (found in dumpsters or trash). The legs are from two discarded dining room chairs. The case I built from scraps of furniture-grade plywood my son found in a dumpster behind a cabinet shop. The drawers are from a discarded computer desk. Bonus hidden drawer in the back was an afterthought. Just have one coat of paint on it right now, so it looks sort of shabby. Another coat of paint and polyurethane and it will be done. What do you think?

Making stuff out of coconut shells

Pretty cool. I like making stuff out of other peoples discards. Wish I had more time for it. There's lots of junk out there sitting on the curbs waiting for the trash truck.

Here is a small table I made from the same chair. I used the seat frame for the top and the rear legs/back for the legs. The dowel pieces I had left over from another project.

I'm working on project buy-a-house ..... it's far more stressful than databases and I'm not enjoying it one bit ... but when it's completed I'm sure it will be great!

My partner is working on a far more exciting project, he is currently almost at completion of building a remote controlled petrol helicopter - it's about 1.5m long and looks pretty awesome - but you can imagine trying to build that in a flat with an inquisitive kitten who just loves wires and cable ties!!!!! I came in to a rucus the other night where she had stolen and run off with one of his cable ties ... it's quite comical at times!

By the way Friday, your projects are cool. I wish I had talent for building stuff like that. My husband's late uncle was a woodworker and he made all kinds of really neat stuff. I think it would be a pretty cool hobby.

PS. Friday: V. cool furniture, wish I had even the slightest creative bone in my body, alas web design is as far as I can stretch my creativity (and other people design the templates for me!) My not-quite-father-in-law designs and makes all kinds of cabinets, shelving units and whatnot and I am in awe of anyone who has those kind of skills!

Looks like a neat house! It's so exciting to buy your first house, I know. We've been in ours for almost 10 years. It needed some work and still needs some work, although we've done loads to it. It was built in 1955 and we bought it from the original owners, so it just needs to be updated in places which we didn't get around to. We've been looking in this area which would put us in a different (better) school district, but most importantly it would put us in the neighborhood with my m-i-l, since she watches our kids for us a lot and it will make it loads easier for me to get to work in the mornings.

My not-for-work-hours projects include a little bit of hobbyist writing. Fantasy fiction or science-fiction, mostly.

So I write government documents by day, fiction by night. Hardly any retraining required.

Yes, well we don't want any mistake about that, do we?

Actually though, I don't know how it is over across the pond but here a house has to have at least 2 bedrooms upstairs in order to be considered a 2-story house. If it only has 1 bedroom up, or if the upstairs is much smaller than the downstairs it's considered 1.5 stories, go figure. Still don't know why they need 3 decimal places though.

That's one I hadn't heard before. I know one bedroom houses in the UK can be listed as having two floors, but I think one bedroom are few and far between. Not sure what the rule is here in Canada?

Our house has 1 bedroom a study and the lounge up stairs, it's called split level here in Scotland. Sounds like a strange arrangement, but the view from the lounge is well worth it.

Most of my creativity is through painting, I painted the murals for my garden as attached, I also make dream catchers, but as talismans rather than ornaments.

Polyurethane as a top layer would make it a professional piece of art. Well done.

Here's some pics from what I made in my studio. One cabinet for recording purposes and one for playing purposes. Well, not exactly state of the art engineering, but it does the trick. ( Got the idea from the internet, these are just two Ikea rast cabs put together , costs approx. 14 Euro).

Ron, those cabinets look pretty nice. Woodworking is a nice diversion. My father was a carpenter/house builder, so all of us kids (11) were exposed to it while growing up. Somehow in the last 10 years I have accumulated several power tooks (nothing expensive), that make the job much easier. My first "converson" was turning a student desk into a stereo stand for my oldest son. It sort of grew from there. I have built some pieces from scratch (dining room table), rebuilt an old secretary that was just a pile of boards in a friends basement, but 'converting' is my favorite pastime. It feels good to recycle items that otherwise would end up in the landfill. It drives my wife nuts when I drag stuff home. I found some solid oak boards in the attic of an old house my youngest son lives in, so I have them in the basement now, thinking of making a drop-lid desk for my wife. She wants something to write on. This will be a frame attached to the wall, with the writing surface a hinged surface held 90 degrees to the frame with chain. When closed, it won't take up any space in the room. I want to do something fancy to the bottom of the writing surface so it will look nice when closed.
