Like Statement in Join

I'm attempting to left join two queries in which 4 characters of one field (entire field) match the other query. However, the other queries field has a string of 8-20 characters. The 4 digits could be anywhere in the string but they are consecutive. I thought about using a like statement but can't figure out how to take care of the before & after characters. Any Advice would be great!
