Linking Query?

Hey all,

I basically have a number of records, each record (row) has a field that can identify another record in the database. For example, Record ID 1 has a field that identifies Record ID 5, Record 5 might have an ID that identifes Record 12. Some records will not identify any other records (the field will be null).

Is there a query (or report!) I can make that will show me the records that link. Perhaps so the most current record is at the top and subsequent linking records are beneath it?

Thanks,

Can you post your Table Structure.

What you want is easy provided you have the correct Structure and Relationships.

When you can it would be good if you Googled Relationships and did a bit of research. Normalisation is also a sugbect you should look at.

Thanks for your reply Rain.

I am aware of normalisation and table structures. However, this particular one is tripping me up slightly. I believe what I need is a self join in a query (as the linking records are of the same type and must sit in the same table).

Using my example from my original post;
Record ID 1 has a field that identifies Record ID 5, Record 5 might have an ID that identifes Record 12.

I think my problem is that Record ID 1 does not know about Record ID 12, and must "go through" Record 5 to know that it is linked.

Hope this makes sense!
