I'm sure some of you know about this but a fan made prequel to the Lord of The Rings trilogy was released last weekend now I wouldn't normally post stuff like this on the interweb but this blew me away.

It was done on a £3000 budget and it is frankly astonishingly good, by far much better than any other ones I have seen. It not a crowbarred plot either, if you watch the making of you'll see what I mean.

Oh and speaking of the extras if your remotely interested in video editing/ film production etc the special effect reel is a great example of what can be archived by us mere mortals :p

Minor spoiler: the majority of the landscapes were done using a free piece of software !

Enjoy The Hunt For Gollum

Pretty creative! I'll have to check it out.

I checked this short film out, it is amazing considering the budget available on its production.

For any LOTR film fans out there this is the plot.

This short film explains what happens after Gandalf goes to Hobbiton after realising that Frodo has the Ring of Power, he instructs Frodo that it is not safe to stay in Hobbiton.

The short film now starts, and Gandalf meets up with Strider at Bree and instructs him that the Ring of Power has surfaced and that Gollum was the last creature to have the Ring and that he knows that Bilbo took the ring from him, Gandalf instructs Strider to find Gollum at all costs as if he were to fall into the enemies hands he would divulge the location of the Ring and the new owner. He also instructs Strider to protect Frodo and to meet him at Bree.

Fans of the LOTR films will not be dissapointed, it is very much in the same vein as the feature films, the same score of music, similar special effects and well scripted, some of the acting is a little suspect, but as I said in the same vein as the feature films...

Does this film represent a chunk of the original book that Peter Jackson did not cover in his movies, or is the action and dialogue written especially for this production? (albeit obviously consistent with the books)

but to summarise - the guy making wanted to do a fan made film but didn't want it to be 'between' episodes type or a 'made up' prequel like many other fan films and he found a reference in the appendix iirc that mentioned of this quest which was never in the book so they thought perfect well do that.
