Mail merge problem when using a query using wildcards in Office 2003

I created a select query in Access 2003 using a Wildcard in the criteria but when I use it in Word to do a mail merge it comes out blank. If I remove the wildcard in the criteria, the mail merge result comes out fine in Word. I found a workaround by changing the select query to a make table query then use the newly created table to do the mail merge but it is not efficient work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
