Hi All,

I designed and have for some time now being using a roster made with Excel.
Although this works well it is limited in a lot of things, so I have decided to see if I can do this in Access?

I, with my fellow Supervisors look after a 24/7 operation with a number of different shift patterns.
We currently run 4 different shift patterns, depending on what part of the plant each works in, most are on the 24/7, 12hr pattern, with 2x days, 2x nights, 4 rest day, and there are 4 crews.
The other patterns are Mon-Thurs, 12 hrs, 4x days, 3x rest, 3x nights, 4x rest, there are 2 crews here.
Next Mon-Fri, 5x days, 2x rest, 4 x afternoons, 3x rest.
And lastly Mon-Fri 5x days, 2x rest, 5x Afternoons, 2x rest.

I am thinking I need to make a table for each roster, but do I need to make one for each crew, or do I have to look at this in a different way?
I want to be able to shift personal around, and if they go onto a new roster, or crew that it will show me the work patterns he been on, date of change, and then carry on?

I hope I have included all the information needed to get started.
Any help would be grateful.

Regards
Kevin.

I would strongly recommend that you prior to any development look into commercial software and/or services. You can get web based automated scheduling & roster assignment respecting working rules & practices, holidays, scheduled closures that e.g. allows people swapping shifts by textmessages and much more ... all stuff that it would take ages to write, setup and verify yourself.

If you insist on doing it yourself, do not encode data into structure: data of one type all goes into the same container, just tagged appropriately. Translated into English: keep all rosters in the one table where they belong.

Thank you for your reply.
I had looked at a couple of rosters online, but none of them worked with the rosters and rotations, and how to make them work and report for my department.
If I could find a good web based (to work on our intranet) system, allowing me to put each person into a crew and shift, manage leave and Overtime, and report back on stats as required, I'd be most happy.

I should do a new search, it's been over a year since I last looked, so there might be something there now.
It would be easier.

Regards Kevin.

Aeons ago I looked for webbased things on hotscripts.com - give it a whirl
