hi there can someone explian to me how the max function works!
 
Max(Column Of figures) will return the highest number. If the column contains 1 to 10, the result will be 10.

That's true providing the datatype is set to Number. If it is set to text, the Max will be 9.
 
Indeed. So to avoid this and other unexpected results, if working with numbers, don't set the field type to text.

All of the aggregate funcions, including Max, deal with identical data. If your query includes a field which makes every record unique, then you will get every transaction in your results. Sometimes you need to strip out every field except the one you are applying Max to and the ID. If you want additional data, you then join your aggregate query in another select query to retrieve the other data.
