maxlocksperfile error

Hi, I am using ms access 2003 - i get a maxlocksperfile error when i am performing alarge update..i have performed similar updates before succesfully..worked around this problem by using the dbengine.setoptions setting in my vba script..is there any other work around..when working with large recordsets would it help if i 'updates' more often..whena re locks released in ms access.
