Hello All,

I am trying to wrap my head around access. I want to create a database for my dad for his small business as a mechanic. I have created an excel template that we have been using, but I know using a database for all customers would be better than using a separate spread sheet for each customer. I have attached the spreadsheet so you can see what I mean. I am struggling to work out how I can link the customer, to the car, and then to be able to create a service record that I can add records to. Any help would really be appreciated. I have looked all over the web and I cant seem to find a template that I could easily modify.:banghead:

Thanks

Just try to think in terms of how the tables will relate to each other
ie how will a customer table relate to a vehicle, could that customer have more than one vehicle, if so then there will a one to many (customer to vehicle) relationship and you will need a separate table for vehicles.
A vehicle will have many services so there will be a one to many (vehicle to services) relationship and you will need a separate table for services.
Similarly with payments but this may become slightly more complex depending on how you want the financial side of things to work.
To link tables together you need keys, ie the primary key in the customer table will be a foreign key in the vehicle table, likewise the primary key in the vehicle table will be a foreign key in the services table.
In this way you can link a customer to a service via the vehicle table

Hi David,

I can take the payments out of the equation completely as it will be dealt with on sage. I know practically nothing about access, its been a long time since I used it! any help would be greatly appreciated.

h tt p:/ /access.microsofttemplates. org/personal-templates/vehicle-maintenance-record-tracker-template.html

found the above template, anyone know how I can adapt this so that I can create a multiple customer records each with their own service record. I need to be able to search the completed database by registration number or surname..

Thanks
