i am working on my database in 2 different locations. the database is too large to fit onto a floppy disk and when i transport it using a cdr or cdrw it says that the database is read only. are there any other ways that i could transport the database which dont cost a bomb.

the database is around 25MB big, this is mainly due to me having image in the database i think.

any help would be much appriciated.

thank you

The reason the Db will be read only is because you cant write back and forth to a CD.
Copy the Db to your Hard drive, then right click and select properties, then uncheck the read only check box.

I get around this by using winzip and compressing to the CD. Then when you extract it to the second location it will be ready to use.

Another way I have gotten around this is to split the Db into a FE/BE.
Then you only need to copy the front end back and forth.

The advantage of this is you can have different sets of data to play with without corrupting the database with dummy entries.

My favorite new toy is using a thumbnail drive. They might be called something different depending on where you live but they are little USB storage devices. You can get them as small as 32 megabytes and up to 500 megabytes. Most are smaller than a bic lighter. Check out the Sunday ads for a good rebate for I got a 64 megabyte thumbnail drive months back for $15 after a $30 mail-in rebate.

Windows XP computers recognize the drives "as-is" and older versions of Windows will have to install the driver that comes with the devices.

The best thing about these USB thumbnail drives is they are like a mini hard drives. You can copy, open and modify the files [databases] directly from the drive and save your changes without having to copy the files to your hard drive and also not worry about the read-only thingy when burning the file to a CD.

Agreed, Rich.
I bought a 128 mb thumb drive about a year ago. At the time they were about a dollar a mb. Now they are about 1/4 of that :(
There only draw back is computers without a USB port, getting less of a problem these days.
My kids do there homework, back and forth to school.

A good investment.
