need subform help!

Greetings, I have a database that creates quotes. In the main quote form there is a subform attached in a parent-child relationship. The problem is with the item number. The way it works now is the user has to type in the item number (ex: 1 then 2 then 3.. and so on). Is there any way to have the first line in the subform to default to 1 then the second line to add 1 to the first line to get 2...and so on. There must be a way to do this!
