Hi all,

I am a relatively new Access user, well-versed in Filemaker though. I am trying to create a form, and actually succeeding in creating it. What I cannot seem to do is create new records. I asked my dad, who is experienced in a few different database programs and he suggested that it sounded like it was in read-only format. I cannot seem to change that setting anywhere and the official Access help site is a joke if you want any specific help. I managed to stumble in here today and I'm really crossing my fingers that someone might have some insight as to what I need to do. Any help anyone can offer is greatly appreciate. Thank you all in advance...

What is your form's RecordSource? (you can find this out in the properties sheet for the form). If it's a query, you might be limited by the query's recordset type (set it to dynaset to update records). If it's a table, make sure your AllowEdits property (on the form) is set to yes, and under Database Properties (file menu) your database is not read-only. That's all I can think of for now.

Ok, I checked all that and everything seems to be as it should be except that there IS no recordsource...is that bad? How can I fix it if necessary?

Thank you so much for replying so quickly!

Assuming you have a table constructed to hold records then use the form wizard to build the form for you. The MS site actually has a wealth of information if you look for the right thing. Try downloading some of the sample databases, ie "Solutions", "Orders", "Northwind" to name but a few.

If your form has fields in it, it has to have a RecordSource. In the design view, click on the properties button (finger pointing at a page). Make sure the upper left hand corner of the form is clicked (has a little black dot/square in it) so that you are looking at the FORM properties. The first row should be RecordSource, and that should be the name of your table. If you click on the RecordSource text box area, a down arrow should appear from which you can select the table you want to use (i.e. add records to). Hope this helps!

Thank you all SO much for your help! I think I've finally got it working! Not real sure which advice finally did the trick, but...at least it's working! You guys have been really helpful, I can't thank you enough!
