hi all,

i m new access projects.I have experience of working in vb and vb.net.Typically i know how to save/retrieve data in the central databases like sql server.

Now i have worked in the .adp project which has a sql server as the backend.but i have to create a mdb project and i dont have any idea in working in mdb prjects.

Basically i like to-
1.mdb projects are distributed application so how will i collect the all the data in 1 database.

2.i know abt ado to save/retrieve data..how in a mdb projects i will work with the data..actually i dont want to use the bound forms..

anyone pls guide me on these issues..thanks

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how access works in a multi user environment or may be provide me any usefull links.

Thanks to all.

In Access Help search field, enter "Create an Access database". Learn the basics here. It is the most efficient method for you to get up to speed for free. You can also google the web with "Learn Microsoft Access" and come up with thousands of links there.

The biggest challenge facing most people learning databases is getting out of the "flatfile" mode and into the "relational data" mindset, which is key. Start reading up!

Thanks for your reply but the problem with is just the opposite.I have worked in relational databases like sql server 2000.

I am trying to create a small application in access..a mdb project. But this application will be running on different PC's(users) so how will i get a centralised database??

thanks

You will need a front end/Back end set up. Once your application is done, access provides you with a utility to split the DB. The FE contains all the forms for the users to manipulate the data and the BE contains the tables that store the data. They talk to each other through linked tables. Place the BE on a server or shared folder. The FE can either be on the server or you can install a copy on each users machine.

Thanks for replying ..thats what i was looking for.I have worked on a adp project but right now i have started working in a mdp prj.

So do u mean that we can even spilt a mdb prjects as a FE and a BE??

Could you provide me more details on this??

Thanks

Tools/Database Utilities/Database splitter
That is where you will find the utility to split your .mdb into a FE/BE. Once this is done the 2 halves will talk to each other via linked tables. After placing the BE on the server or folder you may have to relink the tables due to the change of physical address. This is done in the tools/Database utilities menu as well.

Its pretty straightforward. :D

Thats cool..i didnt know that..Thanks for telling me.Just a last question.when i will spilt the database the FE also have a mdb extension or it will spilt the FE as adp and the BE as mdb?

In my code i am making connection like this

db=currentproject.connection

I think i have to change it after spilting the database.

Right now i m busy in making the project but these questions were troubling me as i dont much knowledge how access works as a FE and BE.

Thanks for ur help.

Both the FE and the BE will have .mdb file extensions. It is advisible to make the FE an .mde file though for increased security. That feature can be found in the tools menu too.

Edit:
I also would suggest doing a search here on the forum. There is a wealth of knowledge and whatever questions you may have probably have been answered.
