I created a database in MS access and stored it on a file server. I have set permission for 4 users to have read access only and one user to have read & write access.

My Problem,

When the user with read & write access is in the database all others with read-access are not allowed to view the database.

If a user with read access is in the database first and the user with write permissions tries to access the database they are kicked to read-only.

I don't know what to do. One of our servers has MSDE on it and I have even tried to convert it over using the upsizing wizard but I have had no luck.

Any Suggestions,

did u use 2 database ( front end and backend ) ?

if yes,
did u copy ur front end DB to ur client computer ?

( u should store backend DB on server )

if u did all that thing and still got the same message, i think
u should check ur access setting.

Tools >> Option >> Advanced >> Default Open mode
should be shared

Best regards
melinda

(sorry my english so poor :( hope this information can help u )

Okay

I was not running my database with a front and back end. I was just trying to share that one file with everyone. Since your post I did create a front and back end to my database. Know I can have the user with read & write in the database at the same time as all the read only access. I just copied the backend to all the read only users. Then went in to the file and made it read-only. I opened the copied database and made a new query for that user. But now when I update the front end the back end does not update the data. Not sure if I did this right!

Now What

Sorry I did not give you enough info. I did correct the confusion of the back-end and the front end. I know have the back-end on the server and I have copied the front end to 2 users.

My permissions are set through windows.

You say that you cannot share a database if someone is updating data and objects (which is what I want to be able to do through a form), then how can I share my database.

Here is a breakdown of what I want.
1 user to enter data
4 users to read that same data.

As of right now I have to set read & write permissions for everyone because it will not let me open them all at once with just read permissions.
