"No copying" error message

I want to copy the main table to make changes to the fields (being safety conscious). I get this strange error message,

"The Microsoft Jet Engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change data at the same time."

But no-one else is using the database. No matter how I try to duplicate the table, Access stops me. Anyone any experience of this fault please?

If only, UncleG. No, I know what you refer to, but not that. Lots of crashes - where would we be with Windows without them - but no homeless ldb.

I was able to copy the whole db and so I do have a safety net. But I would like to know what is keeping the main table so secure.
